Tom Shanks, RSW, RGI Of all the many talented painters we have had the great pleasure and privilege of showing, none has been as sensitive and satisfying as Tom Shanks, whose portrayal of the Scottish landscape is a constant source of admiration and pleasure. His latest solo exhibition once again confirms these qualities. Tom has been painting now for over seventy years, mostly drawings & watercolour landscapes of the west highlands and islands. He had holidays in Skye from 1929 onwards, and this had a profound effect upon his work, emotionally and nostalgically. It is the essence of mystery and loneliness in wild headlands, mountains and moorlands that he tries to depict in his paintings. He has had numerous exhibitions throughout the years in Glasgow and Edinburgh and his work is admired and collected by many, both in Scotland and abroad. Tom began his career with Templeton's Carpets, in the design department and first exhibited paintings in the Templeton Art Club in 1937. This was cut short by the war, through which he sketched and painted when time permitted. After the war he was encouraged by Sir Harry Barnes to enter Glasgow School of Art. Graduating in 1950, he worked freelance at mural painting, stage designing and then with the Edinburgh Tapestry Company, where he designed and printed ceramic tiles. He taught art in secondary schools from 1964-1983.
