'Land of the Mountain & the Flood, Paintings & Drawings, Past & Present.' We have a strong, friendly relationship with the artist Tom Shanks, having great admiration for his work, and respect for him as an artist. These are the reasons we are so pleased to be having this exhibition, and it is these qualities which make representing him so pleasurable. The whole thing is a joy. His faithful and poetic representation of the Scottish landscape identifies the special quality that he brings to this scene. He evokes a combination of reactions to subjects that everyone knows, presenting familiar Scottish scenes, giving them a new sort of honesty, adding a bit of romance. They are not just technical, he expresses ideas, attitudes and reactions to his subject using his ability to paint with a warm sincerity.
